In many jurisdictions, including Portugal, and under certain conditions, it may be possible to extend the protection granted by a patent for active pharmaceutical ingredients or active substances of plant protection products for a period of up to 5 years. In the case of pharmaceuticals, under specific circumstances, this period may be extended for an additional six months. This extension of protection is obtained through the granting of the so-called Supplementary Protection Certificate, a national right that must be applied for locally and will be granted locally if all specific conditions are met.
